Lent is the Catholic season of forgiveness and pardon. Forgiveness is when you feel the need to excuse someone for their actions. Forgiveness is very important after all. During lent, we give up something that we love for 40 days. We also reflect on forgiving those who have offended us. This is very important to finding God.
Forgiveness is very important because it leads you to God, and it even makes yourself feel better when you don’t hold any grudges against anyone. The church teaches forgiveness by praying at mass every week. We ask God to forgive us of our sins, which is quite similar to how we forgive those who have offended us. The Bible states “And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” (Mark 11:25) This means that if we forgive others, we may be forgiven for any of the times that we have offended others.
One saint that practiced forgiveness is St. Maria Goretti. St. Maria Goretti was a young 11 year old girl who was murdered at a very young age. She was believed to have forgiven her killer and appeared to him later in prison. She said “I forgive Alessandro Serenelli … and I want him with me in heaven forever”. Now St. Maria Goretti is the patron saint of forgiveness. There are many reasons why you should forgive and why it’s so important. The season of Lent is also very important. Therefore, you should always forgive and not hold grudges.
