Leading up to Easter, what are you giving up for Lent?
An old friend of mine usually drinks 4 to 5 cups of coffee a day. Not the healthiest thing in the world, but he does put in a handful of working hours a week and relies on the caffeine to get him through the day. Coffee is part of his daily routine and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Except for LENT, when he sacrifices his daily love of coffee, some may say an addiction – for 40 days starting on Ash Wednesday leading on to Easter.
For Catholics, this means giving up meat on Fridays for the season. Fasting for me won’t work because I enjoy eating. If giving up food isn’t much of a sacrifice for you, choose something else that you have to make a serious effort giving up. For many people, that may mean 40 days sacrificing something they enjoy like shopping or challenging themselves like fasting. Another suggestion may be spending less time using media, like your Blackberry or I-Pad. Not logging on to Facebook, may be a challenge – maybe even impossible for teenagers.
Whatever you decide to give up for this Lenten season, don’t forget that God gave up and sacrificed his only Son for us.
I would love to hear what Lenten activities your school is initiating this season.
