The Tablet Jr. Is Coming January 25!

“A new year – new beginnings” can certainly be applied to what is happening behind the scenes right now at The Tablet. Students are working to finalize their edits and submit copy to the editor for the very first edition of The Tablet Jr, a monthly four-page pullout for school age children, K-8.

We saw a multi-faceted opportunity to create a means for student engagement with The Tablet. Parents of diocesan students have been supporting The Tablet as part of the technology initiative of DeSales Media Group, which puts iPads and Chromebooks into schools. The Tablet Jr was designed so the faith-based stories can be read by all members of the family, and catechists will have an age-appropriate resource to read with their classes.

Through months of collaboration between CTN, the educational services department of DeSales, and The Tablet editorial staff, a design was created that will include two features written by middle-grade students from diocesan schools as well as student created artwork. Additional elements include a question-and-answer column, a diocesan history column, fun activities such as word puzzles, and a news article written by a member of The Tablet staff.

“The Tablet has a great tradition of connecting with young people,” said William Maier, CEO of DeSales Media Group, which oversees publication of The Tablet. “Tablet Jr will be the latest effort of staying in touch with our youth and keeping them in touch with the Church.”

The first edition will be published January 25th to connect with The Tablet special Catholic Schools Week issue.

All editions for this school year will include a suggested activity from our sponsor Sadlier, a publisher of Catholic religious education material for classroom and home. The Tablet Jr  will be managed by CTN, which will work with a different school for each monthly theme. Let us know how you enjoy our first issue, and don’t forget – sign up to receive The Tablet at home.
