Juneteenth is the day that symbolizes when all enslaved people were aware and informed of their freedom. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official on January 1, 1863. That news—long delayed by the slaveholders in a state under Confederate control until the end of the war, set off wide-ranging celebrations among the 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas.
